Walt Smith kicks off jazz lineup
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado “This Wednesday, Summer of Jazz triumphantly returns to the valley.
Kicking off the 10-week musical odyssey is Walt Smith, a local favorite and 50-year veteran of the area.
Smith, a Battlement Mesa resident, calls his work “straight ahead jazz.” Think Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, he said. The pianist will be laying down tunes with six other musicians. This marks Smith’s second appearance at the festival. Audience members might remember him subbing for a no-show during 2002’s Coal Seam Fire.
