Walter Kenneth Mateer

Walter Kenneth Mateer passed away peacefully at 9 a.m. on January 4, 2005, in Grand Junction.He was born to Walter and Helen (O’Brien) Mateer on October 20, 1922 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He married Mary Bergstrand on January 28, 1950 in Sun Valley, California. He lived in Solvang, California before moving to Glenwood Springs in May of 2000. He served in the Air Force for six years and owned his own excavation and swimming pool business until retirement. Walter loved his family and loved his wife Mary’s cooking. He played billiards every Friday with his friends. Survivors include son Kenneth Mateer (Michelle) of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; daughters Barbara Tanaka (Glenn) of Glenwood Springs; and Pat Pappin of Mousehole, England; brother Bill Mateer of Alexandria, Minn.; and eight grandchildren.A Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Glenwood Springs, and funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 12 at St. Stephen’s.
