War on Iraq would be genocide

Dear Editor,

You don’t have to go far back in history to find lies told by U.S. presidents. Yet the American public is willing to suspend distrust of politicians and hail Bush as a saint who could not possibly lie to them.

Americans believe that the Iraqis welcome “liberation” because Saddam is a brutal dictator who oppresses women and suppresses religious freedom … because the Bush administration says so. The truth is, the Iraqis have free education and health care. They enjoy freedom of religion and women have rights.

Americans believe Iraq is linked to al-Qaida … because the Bush administration says so. The truth is, al-Qaida wants nothing to do with Hussein because he has opposed Islamic fundamentalism for 30 years. Officials from the CIA, State Department and Pentagon, have charged that the Bush administration has exaggerated evidence of the threat of Saddam – including distorting his links to the al-Qaida terrorist network.

Americans are falling prey to the same presentation of war as logical and necessary that the Germans did under Hitler. We are about to become party to yet another genocidal event.

But there is hope. Americans are moral, compassionate people.

Armed with the truth, they will make the right decision. It is the citizen’s responsibility to obtain the truth, speak the truth and act on the truth.

We will not let the Bush administration manipulate us with fear and lies. Peace and compassion must prevail.

The alternative is not just genocide, it’s suicide.
