Watercolorist featured in Redstone exhibit

New watercolors by artist Kurt Isgreen will be on display at the Redstone Art Center through October. The exhibit will open with an artist’s reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20. The exhibit concludes a three-day painting workshop sponsored by the Redstone Art Foundation.

Inspired by the magnificent splendor of the western landscape, Isgreen captures the essence of his subject with a distinct, personal interpretation. In the studio or on site, he achieves a direct, spontaneous rendering of light, color and pattern.

“Rather than copy or reproduce nature, I look for the fundamental rhythm and movement in the landscape – an underlying structure defined by objects and how they occupy space. Taking the forms, colors and shapes Mother Nature offers, I reinvent and reconstruct in order to make visible a personal interpretation of place.

“Working in an immediate and spontaneous manner, I strive to capture the vitality and unity found in nature. Transparent watercolor’s inherent qualities of light and fluidity best achieve these aims.”

Isgreen has lived and painted in western Colorado for more than 30 years. A graduate of Western State College, he prefers to paint plein-air, exploring the locations near his home and studio in Montrose.
