The seventh annual Waterwells for Africa 5 kilometer run and walk took place on Sunday morning at Veterans’ Park in Silt with 84 participants lining up to take on the hills and neighborhoods near the Stoney Ridge Ball Field.

The race, put on by Pastor Aaron Masimer and his staff at the Sonlight Foursquare Church in Silt, is a benefit to help the people of Malawi, Africa build water wells in drought-stricken parts of their country.

“Each well that is built, helps to ease the burden mostly on women and children in Malawi having to transport water sometimes as much as 5 to 6 hours a day from the source, back to their villages,” said Masimer.

The proceeds from Sunday’s race totaled just under $7,000 which will help to build another well in Malawi.

Following the race, runners and walkers were treated to several raffle prizes as well as grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and an abundance of homemade dishes and desserts.

On Saturday, the running scene shifts to New Castle for the annual Hogback Hustle 5k Run, starting at 9am at the New Castle City Market. Contact New Castle Recreation for further info.
