West Glenwood land eyed by commercial developer

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – A West Glenwood landowner is in talks with “a large corporation” about possibly building some sort of commercial business just north of the existing Glenwood Springs Mall.

“I can’t talk about it at this point,” said Floyd Diemoz, owner of the parcel of vacant land, which recently has sprouted 40-foot tall “story” poles, designed to indicate the height of a planned structure.

Diemoz confirmed that “a large corporation is looking at various sites” on the Western Slope, to find a place to build a commercial project.

He said the poles are to give the prospective developers an idea of whether a sign they put up would be visible from I-70.

The poles have remained in place for several days, he said, because the corporation’s representatives are having difficulty determining the visibility of the poles “because of the speeds” at which motorists typically zoom past on I-70.

The Garfield County building and planning department had no information related to any potential development of the property, which is just outside the Glenwood Springs city limits.

At Glenwood Springs City Hall, planning director Andrew McGregor reported, “We have had discussions with a developer regarding the possibility of annexing the property. No application has submitted to date.”

The 15-acre parcel currently is zoned for commercial development, and Diemoz declined to discuss the possibility of annexing into the city.
