What has been the biggest surprise (good or bad) in baseball this year?
I don’t follow baseball all that much, but the biggest surprise to me this year has been the Detroit Tigers.
They were supposed to have the most dangerous hitting lineup in all of the MLB, and
they come out with the worst start in franchise history.
This team was many people’s pick to win the whole thing. Ouch.
I don’t know that much about baseball, so that’s all I can say.
If there is one surprise headline this season it has to be that the Tampa Bay Rays (not “Devil Rays” anymore) are the best in the AL East.
Out of nowhere a team that many thought would be at this point next year popped up and said, “We can’t wait ’till next year, why can’t we be good this year?”
And so it is the Rays in first place in the AL East, ahead of both the defending champion Red Sox and New York Yankees.
It’s actually quite simple: They play the game how it’s supposed to be played. Instead of always looking for that highlight play or hitting a home run every at-bat, they play nice, patient baseball and take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself.
I know it’s still early, but don’t be surprised if Tampa Bay is still hanging around when the playoffs begin.
