What recession? Jobless rate dropping

Garfield County’s unemployment dropped slightly in June to 2.8 percent, said Bill Thoennes with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Garfield County’s unemployment rate compares with a statewide unemployment rate of 5.4 percent, Thoennes said. Unemployment has dropped statewide for the past four months.

“Four months of declining unemployment reflects an improving economy,” said Colorado Gov. Bill Owens. “Colorado’s steadily dropping unemployment is bucking the national trends to the point where the state is almost a full percentage point lower than the national average.”

After adjusting for normal seasonal labor force movements, total employment in June rose 6,800 to its present level of 2,248,800.

A year ago in June, total employment was 2,212,900.

Colorado also experienced a drop in first-time unemployment claims in June.
