Applications are now available for the 2009 Miss Strawberry Days Scholarship Contest and are available at strawberrydaysfestival.com, at your local school, or by contacting the chamber at 945-6589. Contest applications are due today.

A total of $4,500 in scholarship funds will be awarded to three local young women. Applicants must be age 16-20 as of June 1 and must be a resident of the Re-1 or Re-2 school districts. Also the women must never have been married and never have had children. The scholarship award is distributed directly to the recipient’s continuing education institution of choice in the amount of $2,000 for first place, $1,500 for second place and $1,000 for third place.

Laurie Loeb’s Rhythms of the Heart presents a “beyond-beginner” African-inspired drumming workshop on from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Carbondale Community School. Focus will be on an African-inspired multi-part rhythm, rhythmic sensibility, fluidity of strokes, and mind-body coordination and transformation. In addition to djembe, participants will also have the opportunity to play dunun, shekere and cowbell. The workshop will conclude with a facilitated improvisational drum circle in which everyone will create their own rhythms and/or use those just taught or otherwise known.

Participants must have their own djembe or ashiko, command of the three basic djembe strokes (bass, open tone, slap), and preferably experience playing multi-part rhythms. This workshop is for all levels of intermediate drummers.



Workshop fee is $45. Advance registration is required. To register for this and the June 13 intermediate level workshop (to contain different material), the fee is $80 for both. Steve’s Guitars in downtown Carbondale hosts a special musical event Saturday, May 16, to raise money for several local high school students who plan to pursue a career in the health fields.

The evening will feature music by local singer-songwriter Matt Johnson beginning at 8 p.m. Donations will be taken at the door.

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) students from Glenwood Springs, Roaring Fork and Basalt high schools attended a special Med Prep Program at the Roaring Fork School District Career Center in Glenwood. They recently went to Denver for a statewide competition where they qualified for the 2009 HOSA National Leadership Conference, to be held June 24-27 in Nashville, Tenn.

New Hopeful Heart and the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts would like to invite persons, and their caregivers, of the Glenwood Springs and Carbondale Area, who are in recovery from drug addiction, brain disorders and/or mental health issues to participate in a mural project titled “This Little Light of Mine, I’m Going to Make It Shine.” First organizational meeting will be Wednesday May 20, at the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts Artist in Residence Art Studio, at 7 p.m. Well-known local artist Renick Stevenson will be directing project. Austin-based musician Carrie Rodriguez brings her tour of the western states to Steve’s Guitars in downtown Carbondale on Wednesday, May 20, beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Rodriguez has captivated audiences with her powerful voice and deft fiddle playing, which earned her an opening slot on Lucinda Williams 2007 tour, during which she and her band recorded her “Live In Louisville” CD.

Joining Rodriguez on the current tour are Hans Holzen on guitars and Kyle Kegerreis on bass, with special guests Romantica.

Jennetta M. Howell will perform A One Woman Show at the Cardiff Schoolhouse in Glenwood Park May 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m.

The theme of the performance will be A Journey to New York and Back, which will be a showcase of music, rhythm and rhyme.

This is a Champ Chair Players presentation.

Park at the Sopris Elementary school and walk on the bike path to the school house.

Tickets at the door are $15, and seating is limited, so bring a chair.

Join Colorado Animal Rescue for our seventh annual Mayday for Mutts adoptathon, featuring discounted adoption fees, live music and food, agility and fly-ball demos, bouncy house and cotton candy for the kids and many local vendors. This is a family fun event. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Colorado Animal Rescue.

Art work by Roaring Fork High School students will be on display during the RFHS Annual Art Show May 18-20 in Carbondale.

The show takes place in the auxiliary gym at RFHS, and is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Some of the artwork will be for sale.
