Whitewater park meeting is tonight
Glenwood Springs is seeking public input on a tentative plan to build a whitewater park in west Glenwood.Glenwood Springs’ whitewater park task force is scheduled to meet from 7:30-9 p.m. tonight at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. The meeting is to air public concerns and opinions about the proposed site, and also to educate people about the design and construction of the park.Glenwood Springs City Council recently gave the task force approval to pursue possible west Glenwood locations, near the Colorado River bridge at Midland Avenue and downriver from the Volkswagen dealership. The task force is contacting private land users and businesses along that stretch of river, but also encourages them to attend the meeting, along with river users, including fishing outfitters, rafting companies and private boaters. The group’s biggest concern is parking.”We are looking for parking alternatives and possible public-private partnerships with existing businesses in that area,” said task force co-chair Lori Hogan.Advantages of a west Glenwood location include easy river access, a nearby bike path, and the ability to keep the park in city limits and contribute to Glenwood’s economy. The group originally had hoped to locate the facility downtown, in the Two Rivers Park vicinity, but the Hot Springs Pool raised fears that the project could damage the aquifer feeding the pool. The company is supporting the task force in pursuing a west Glenwood site.
