Wilderness Society praises Glenwood Springs BLM work

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” Although the Wilderness Society has often criticized the Bureau of Land Management, and even threatened to sue it, the environmental organization still lauded the agency for work it did in 2008.

The group recognized work the BLM did this year by giving it two Comparative Analysis of Particular Excellence (CAPE) awards for work the local BLM Glenwood Springs field office did to incorporate public input into a resource management plan revision for the area.

Those awards stem from an effort by the Glenwood Springs Field Office and the BLM’s Northwest Resource Advisory Council (RAC) to create a “subgroup to provide community input to the agency” during the management plan revision process.

“We hope as the draft and then final plans are prepared, the BLM will continue to work with the RAC subgroup and consider the many values of these lands,” according to a statement from the Wilderness Society.

That Glenwood Springs RAC subgroup has been cited as an example for subgroups working on other resource management plans, according to the Wilderness Society.

“If the BLM received a CAPE award, it means the agency, usually on a local level, made a decision that stands out for its attention to conservation values,” according to the Wilderness Society statement.
