NEW CASTLE – Becky Rippy of New Castle sat on the deck by the side of her house on County Road 240 and waited to see if the flames from a fire behind her home would pose any serious danger.

The fire, which was believed to have been started by a lightning storm, broke out around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday north of County Road 240 and had burned about 20 acres by 7 p.m., according to Burning Mountains Fire Chief Brit McLin.”It was west of the New Castle Fire (earlier this summer) and on private property,” McLin said. “A second, smaller fire also broke out nearby on (Bureau of Land Management) property.”

It still made Becky and her husband, Steve Rippy, a little nervous. Steve went up to the site to help with the fire, along with some of his brothers, bringing hoses and backhoes to help fight the flames.”It’s more flames than I’d like to see,” Becky Rippy said, watching the fire and both black and white smoke billowing into the air, while also seeing fire trucks and hearing sirens going up the road. “It’s pretty close.”

Burning Mountains Fire Department responded to the fire, as did the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. A slurry bomber also dropped a load of retardant on the blaze.”There were never any structures in danger, and there has been no evacuations at this point,” McLin said, shortly after 7 p.m. “We’re feeling pretty good about it for tonight.”
