Wildfire burns near Roan Plateau

A wildfire had burned about 10 acres at the base of the Roan Plateau near Rifle as of late afternoon Thursday. The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. Thursday in Thirty-Two-Mile Gulch near the JQS Trail, said Lee Rickard, fire management officer with the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Center, based in Rifle. He said lightning may have caused the blaze. Light winds contributed to its spread.Rifle Fire Protection District operations chief Kevin Costanzo was still on the scene at 7 p.m. He agreed that the probable cause of the fire was a lightning strike. A storm cell had passed through the area the previous night. After the strike, the brush simmered until it caught fire Thursday afternoon, Costanzo said. No structures were immediately threatened. As of 7 p.m., 20 firefighters were working the fire, which was mostly “laid down,” according to Costanzo, although he couldn’t give estimates on containment. Two helicopters and four engines – two from Rifle and two from the Bureau of Land Management – were on the scene. Costanzo anticipated crews would be working on containing the fire through the night. Officials also received a report Thursday of smoke east of Harvey Gap Reservoir, north of the Grand Hogback near the junction of the Buford and Grass Valley roads. Further information wasn’t available Thursday.
