SILT ” Burning Mountains Fire Protection District responded to a wildland fire burning north of Interstate 70 and west of Silt at approximately 1:45 Sunday afternoon.

The Garfield County Emergency Communication Center received several calls from residents and contacted local authorities.

Authorities said that high winds Sunday afternoon pushed flames from an apparent permitted controlled burn which was started earlier in the day.

The fire reportedly jumped part of the Colorado River and burned an island of private property, along with 25-30 acres of private land, but no structures were threatened as of 7 p.m.

No information on the current status of the fire was immediately available Monday morning. This story will be updated as more information is released.
