With no contest, CMC cancels election

Colorado Mountain College has canceled its election for three director seats because of a lack of competition. Three director candidates stepped forward, but no one has challenged them, said CMC election coordinator Toni Black.Friday was the deadline for filing election petitions. Two of the seats will have new directors. In District 1, which covers most of Pitkin County, Anne Freedman, of Basalt, takes the position vacated by Jacque Whitsitt. Whitsitt declined to run for a second term, Black said.Freedman, a Basalt trustee, also retired from a career in education. She has a doctorate in political science and was a college professor for 30 years at Roosevelt University in Chicago.Filling the vacated seat in District 3 in western Garfield County is Roy Brubacher, of Parachute. He takes over for Judith Hayward, who reached term limitations.CMC board chair Doris Dewton, of Edwards, will serve a second term as director in District 7, which includes most of Eagle County, Black said. Dewton is a former U.S. Department of Energy employee and later worked as a Washington lobbyist for the oil industry.Brubacher retired as Colorado’s assistant commissioner for education. He worked for 43 years in education, serving first at a variety of Colorado schools as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent. He worked for 22 years in the state Department of Education.Hayward has served on the CMC board since 1987.Contact Donna Gray: 945-8515, ext. 510dgray@postindependent.com
