Woman escapes vehicle that plunges into river

Staff Report

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – A woman was in stable condition at Valley View Hospital Sunday evening after the car she was driving veered off Interstate 70 into the Colorado River.

The one-car accident took place at mile marker 113 of eastbound I-70. The Glenwood Springs Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 10:43 a.m. Sunday.

The driver, whose name was not released Sunday, got out of the vehicle under her own power and climbed to safety on the riverbank. The vehicle had become completely submerged and was not visible, the fire department reported.

The woman was the only occupant of the vehicle. Police warmed her with coats from officers and bystanders.

The fire department used a low-angle rope rescue system to help the victim up to the interstate and an ambulance.

No information was released Sunday on the cause of the accident or the status of the vehicle.
