Woman hit by semitrailer dies
An elderly woman from Czechoslovakia who had been visiting Glenwood Springs died Tuesday afternoon from injuries caused when she was hit and then run over by a semitrailer the previous day.Eva Wurstova, 72, died around 3 p.m. Tuesday at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood. An autopsy is scheduled for today, but Wurstova apparently died from multisystem trauma to her body, said Steven Pollard, chief deputy coroner for Garfield County. Both of Wurstova’s legs had to be amputated following the accident, which occurred Monday evening in West Glenwood. The truck driver, Daniel Richard Jackson, 34, of Mt. Vernon, Mo., had been charged Monday night with careless driving resulting in injury. Glenwood police Lt. Bill Kimminau said it would be up to the District Attorney’s Office to decide whether to amend that charge to careless driving resulting in death. Both charges are misdemeanors, he said.Pollard said Wurstova, who is from Prague, apparently was on vacation and had just arrived by bus in Glenwood Springs Monday when the accident occurred.According to the initial police investigation, Jackson had parked his truck facing east on Highway 6, was experiencing mechanical problems and decided to pull into a truck stop for repairs.Wurstova apparently was walking from the south shoulder of Highway 6 north to Soccer Field Road, and the semi backed into her and knocked her down at the edge of the shoulder and crosswalk.Jackson then reportedly pulled forward and ran over her legs, stopping only when a witness ran out and alerted him.Contact Dennis Webb: 945-8515, ext. email@example.com
