Woman suffers minor injuries in auto fire

A Carbondale woman avoided serious injury after her car crashed and caught fire near Carbondale Monday afternoon. The accident forced Highway 82 eastbound traffic to be routed onto County Road 100 for about one and a half hours, and a westbound lane of 82 to be closed due to the fire for about an hour. The accident occurred at about 2:49 p.m. when Anne Sheppard Cooke, 59, was traveling east in the left lane of 82 in a 2005 Subaru Forester. She swerved to avoid another vehicle that was making a legal protected left turn at a traffic signal from 82 onto County Road 100, the Colorado State Patrol reported.Cooke avoided hitting the vehicle and went back into the left lane and off the left side of the road into the median. The car then rotated 180 degrees clockwise, came back onto the roadway and rolled once before coming to rest on its wheels, blocking the left lane of eastbound 82.Cooke was taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, and released with minor aches and pains, the State Patrol reported. She received a summons for failing to observe a traffic control device.Carbondale Fire/EMS and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the accident.
