Wrestling Bears 15th in Vernal

Staff Report

Larry Schmueser went 4-1 and placed third to lead Rifle’s wrestling team to a 15th-place finish at the past weekend’s Tournament of Champions in Vernal, Utah.

Schmueser, wrestling in the 140-pound weight class, lost to host Uintah’s Taylor Merkley in the semifinals, 5-2.

“Larry had a mission after that,” Bears coach John Wisniewski said.

Another Bear who fared well in Utah was Dallas Rohrig, who went 5-3 and finished up in sixth place at 112 pounds.

Kyle Shaw went 3-2 and placed seventh at 189 pounds.

“Overall, we did pretty good,” Wisniewski said. “We only took eight guys. We had some guys out sick and stuff like that.”

Wisniewksi’s squad was among a pool of more than 40 teams competing at Vernal.

Rifle will head out of state again this weekend for the Green River Tournament in Wyoming.
