ASPEN, Colo. The Winter X Games, to be held later this month at Buttermilk, will have an appropriate musical backdrop. Headliners for the Aprs X concerts are Satellite Party, the new project of pioneering alternative rocker Perry Farrell, and soul rapper Common.Satellite Party will perform Friday, Jan. 26, with Common set for Saturday, Jan. 27. Both shows are free, and will be staged in Wagner Park, in downtown Aspen. The Aprs X appearance is being billed as the live debut of Satellite Party, although a prototype of the group made appearances in mid-2005 in Los Angeles, and played a high-profile appearance at the 2005 Lollapalooza, the groundbreaking festival founded in 1991 by Farrell.Satellite Party, which follows other Farrell projects such as Porno for Pyros and Janes Addiction, and his stint as DJ Peretz, is scheduled to release its debut CD, Ultra Payloaded, in May. The concept album, based on Farrells belief that people can change the world for the better, features Flea and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, singer Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, a 30-piece orchestra, and an unreleased vocal track by the late Jim Morrison titled Woman in the Window. Farrell has described the music as this great hybrid of sound, using electronics and hip-hop beats and the power and strength of rock n roll, and even symphony.Common broke through with the 1994 CD Resurrection. That album featured the song I Used to Love H.E.R., a criticism of hip-hops creative decline. The rapper laid out his own concept for the music in 2000s Like Water for Chocolate, a soul- and funk-inspired album that featured such like-minded hip-hop artists as DAngelo and Mos Def, African singer Femi Kuti, r&b singer Jill Scott, jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove, and the Roots Black Thought, and Ahmir ?uestlove Thompson, who produced the album.Commons 2002 album Electric Circus broke into rock n roll. Common earned a Grammy Award for the song Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop), performed with Erykah Badu, in 2003. His most recent CD, 2005s Be, produced by Kanye West, earned four Grammy nominations, including ones for best rap album and best rap song. His next album, Finding Forever, is due for release later this year.Artists appearing in past Aprs X concerts include Damian Marley, Ozomatli and John Legend.Winter X Games 11, featuring such events as skiing superpipe, snowboard slopestyle, snowmobile snocross and skier X, is set for Jan. 25-28 at Buttermilk.
