Yagatta Regatta

Ask Tom Boas how he got the idea for Yagatta Regatta and he points to the Colorado River.

Hundreds of people participated in this year’s festivities at Two Rivers Park June 3.

The regatta is a river festival and costume party that now appears to be one of the events that officially kicks off summer.

Boas founded the event four years ago as a way to raise money for the Cooper Corner Center, an adult day stay center in Glenwood.

With more than 114 nonprofits in the valley competing for the same money, he knew the annual water gathering would offer something a little different.

The event raised more than $10,000 which goes directly to the center, whose main goal is to keep people from being placed prematurely in a nursing home. Event organizer Jacy Sundlie said the center, which is the only one in the valley, tailors its program to the social, physical and mental needs of each client.

Boas said the center is an asset to families who need help taking care of their loved ones.

“The whole premise is to give families a break,” He said.
