With all the press these days on businesses closing, school budget cuts, and other negative news focused on schools in our district, a refreshing front page news story for our community is going on this week at Crystal River Elementary School: The Carbondale Community Built Playground Project.

I’ve only seen this story tucked in the inner pages of the newspapers, but this is a truly newsworthy event because of the positive community energy this project is creating.

The Carbondale Community Built Playground Project is a playground being built on school property for full community use. On Wednesday the project broke ground, and the vibe at the construction site is truly contagious, and the diversity of volunteers amazing.

I observed skilled construction crews, parents from other elementary schools, moms being taught basic construction skills, friends of friends coming out, Rotary members of all ages, Bridges High School students, Roaring Fork baseball team members coming after school, people coming simply to supply food either that they had baked or from their restaurants, all working together in one big beehive of happy busy-ness.

I encourage other community members in the Roaring Fork Valley to simply show up and volunteer. We’d love to have you be part of this great community effort. Who doesn’t feel better after they’ve volunteered to build something? We’ll be building through Sunday!

Julie Wiley
