Jack Blankenship has twice insinuated in this space that President Obama received a scholarship given only to foreign students, meaning our commander in chief is not an American or he broke the law. Despite Mr. Blankenship’s protestations to the contrary, this is merely a variation on the birther theme.

There are many distortions, insinuations and outright lies being promulgated in the various political campaigns. This “scholarship for foreigners only” canard is an outright lie perpetuated by unscrupulous persons since before the 2008 elections.

Fortunately, there are several nonpartisan sources, among them,, the Washington Post and Politifact, where allegations, rumors and political ads are researched and rated for truth.

The FactCheck site states in part, “The claim is that Obama received a Fulbright scholarship for foreign students, proving that he is not a U.S. citizen and therefore not eligible to be president. Supposedly this was reported by The Associated Press. But the claim is false and the story is a hoax.” The Snopes site agrees.

I suggest Mr. Blankenship make use of these reputable and easily accessible sources of information before he risks repeating baseless rumors. He could then include in any letter with a controversial claim the note that he performed a fact check at a specific source. It would save his audience a lot of time and trouble.

I don’t pretend to understand politics, but I do know this: If I had money to put in tax shelters legally under the law, I would.

If I had a child that lost a parent and was legally eligible for Social Security benefits to help with college to better themselves, you better believe I would get those benefits for my child to help better themselves.

To use this information against people who legally used the benefits, which were available for any legal citizen who had paid into this system all their lives, for themselves and their children is abhorrent to me. Any one of us would do it, and to say otherwise is totally hypocritical.

Seems everyone is upset about the House and Senate deadlocked on any of the issues. Guess what? We elected the people in there to deadlock so Obama would stop the outrageous spending that he was doing, for a reason. What does he do? Waits until everyone is in recess and illegally signs executive orders to keep spending against the wishes of the people.

The real issues in this and other elections is, where are we the people spending our money? Why are we giving billions of dollars to countries that hate us? We need the money here in the Unites States of America to promote the programs to help the homeless, underemployed, elderly and disabled people in our own country first.

If there is money left over after our own needs, roads, bridges, security and items stated above, then and only then can we help other countries learn how to help themselves.

No one would turn down a free handout, as has been proven over and over again. But as the old saying goes, “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” It’s true.

In response to Brad Sherman’s letter of Aug. 8, which was in response to my letter of Aug. 4, Mr. Sherman and a lot of people live in the Land of Oz.

Mr. Sherman did not dispute any of my facts about Planned Parenthood. Mr. Sherman, as Dorothy Gale said in “The Wizard of Oz,” “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

No, we are in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where we have one of two clinics on the Western Slope that perform abortions. The other town is Cortez. There are no breast cancer screenings, only breast exams, like your own self-examinations you do at home. However, there are Pap smear tests and STD testing.

When Planned Parenthood says it’s for women’s rights, it does the exact opposite. It demeans a woman’s body and mind.

Abortions are not a form of birth control. “Planned” is the first part of the name. Why not do this first?

Of the 100 pregnant women that enter Planned Parenthood clinics, 97 get an abortion. Those are the facts.

Pull back the curtain and you’ll see it’s just the Wizard destroying women’s brains, their hearts, their courage and most of all, their baby.

Many contributors from the political right love to tout the Constitution and how it is the paramount basis for our country’s survival. I wonder how they feel about the assaults on more than 22 percent of the amendments?

That’s right. The 14th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 24th and 26th amendments are under serious attack by the Republican Party, and party members are very happy about it. These amendments are all voting rights amendments.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t these elected officials swear an oath to uphold the Constitution? Yet state after state with Republican legislatures are amending voting laws, ID laws, voting hours and early voting.

Funny, we went to war so any Iraqi could have the right to vote, yet right here in the good ol’ USA they are putting up barriers to disenfranchise minorities, the elderly, students and the poor.

They claim they are fighting voter fraud. Every major study, mostly Republican-initiated, has proven voter fraud virtually nonexistent.

The poster child for this unbelievable hypocrisy is Pennsylvania. House Majority Leader Mike Turzai, a Republican, succeeded in writing and passing an ID law that affects hundreds of thousands of voters.

According to a study done by the University of Washington: “Before even considering whether the name conforms, 10.1 percent of eligible voters lack a nonexpired ID (956,998 people), 8.7 percent of registered voters (717,207), and 8 percent of those who voted in the 2008 election (480,842 people).” The study lists minorities, women, students and the elderly as those most likely to not have a valid ID, although they voted in the last election.

Almost half a million voters from Philadelphia will be turned away. Philadelphia voted overwhelmingly for Barack Obama.

Back to Turzai and his “support” of the Constitution: “Pro-Second Amendment? The Castle Doctrine, it’s done. First pro-life legislation, abortion facility regulations, in 22 years, done. Voter ID, which is going to allow Gov. Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done!” (Quoted June 23.)

Any question about motive for ID laws has been answered. How about we try him for treason and take away his right to vote?
