Your Letters

I was delighted to read Jeff Chen’s Nov. 17 column on Pick Up America. The picture of trash floating in the Ohio River was a heartbreaker.

But living next to the Colorado River, I know the truth of that photo. At a time when our community is very concerned about our water supply, it is sad to see our beautiful river full of tires, plastic water bottles (very ironic), pipes and plastic paint buckets, just to name a few.

As I walk around my neighborhood picking up trash, I wonder how we can stop living in our own garbage.

I have written to Budweiser asking if they would support a national campaign to control litter, as much of what I pick up was made by them. In return, I received a form letter thanking me for my concern.

Recently, the scouts in New Castle furnished plastic shopping bags for contributions to LIFT-UP. When I contacted them in the hopes that they would find a more environmentally sound practice, I was told that they just couldn’t think of another way. I shudder to think of how many plastic bags were used in the name of a good cause.

If only we could find a way to bring a program like Pick Up America into the classrooms, I feel certain that the next generation will find a way to return this country to being America the Beautiful.

In the meantime, I will continue to pick up trash whenever I can, as I know many other of my neighbors do. I encourage all of you to do the same, as it’s better do a little than nothing at all.
