I opened a Christian merchandise store on Main Street in Carbondale last July called Heaven’s Gate. I saw a need for it in this spiritually dark valley.

I not only think of the store as a business but a ministry as well. I wanted this to be a place where believers could purchase Bibles and a variety of inspirational gifts, as well as a place where hurting people could come for sound scriptural advice and prayer and not be judged.

Today, more than ever, many are searching for truth, something to believe in. I can assure them from experience that drugs, alcohol, relationships and certainly not their own strength is ever the answer. In a largely secular society fixated on climate change and the right to choose or deny life, some have become their own god; believing solely in their own power and ability to be self-sustainable.

Folks, we cannot even take our next breath without the help of God, who breathed life into us to begin with.

Surrounded by such beauty and majesty in this valley, many have gotten so caught up in worshipping creation and not the Creator of a very precise and intelligent design. I certainly would not want the job of trying to dissect and figure out the answers to all of life’s problems. I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.

I choose to let the Creator of the heavens and Earth be in control. I choose to sit quietly enough at times to hear his still, small but unmistakable voice in my heart for answers in all areas of my life.

The Bible tells us, “In this world you will have trials and tribulation, but fear not, for I have overcome the world.” Yes, there will be pain and sorrow but not confusion if you know that God loves you so much that he sent his son, Jesus Christ, to die for your sins; past, present and future to prove it.

Anyone feeling alone and need someone to listen, please stop by Heaven’s Gate.

This is a letter to the person(s) who stole our car out of the parking lot at Sunlight on Monday, Feb. 4.

I just wanted you to know that what may have been a two-day joy ride/vandalism spree to you was a heartbreaking event for me. My husband and I bought that Isuzu Rodeo seven years ago to start a new life together in the mountains of the Roaring Fork Valley. It had been our companion on more than 150,000 miles of adventures across the country, parked at the trailhead of more than 30 14ers, delivered us to the majority of ski resorts in Colorado and brought us to countless rivers and valleys. It got us and our friends to work, at Sunlight, every day for almost seven years safely. Every ding, every dent and scratch told the story of our lives together. All of those stickers on the ski and bike racks you ripped off the top actually meant something to us. It took us two years to save up for the stereo system you smashed, and we had just replaced the windshield you broke holes through.

I understand it was just a car. Having lost our two beloved dogs in the last year I can put this into perspective; it was fully paid off and fully insured. We will be compensated for the loss. Even everything you took from it can be replaced. But the truth of the matter is that we loved that Rodeo and we’ll never be able to afford to fix what you did to her. It wasn’t supposed to end this way.

Shame on you.
