Post Independent

County commissioners are paid employees of Garfield County. They are paid to conduct county business. Prayer and praying are not county business.

The commissioners recently placed an ad in the Post Independent soliciting religious speakers to conduct religious sessions during county commissioners’ meetings. This action entailed composing the ad and, presumably, paying for the ad using county monies.

No doubt county employees will be assigned the task of corresponding with respondents to this ad and scheduling the religious speakers who are selected. These speakers will ultimately render religious opinions and sentiments using county facilities and consuming the paid time of county staff. Clearly, county resources are being used to solicit and support religious activity.

One could argue, correctly, that these resources are so minimal as to be inconsequential. And indeed, it is not the resources, it is the principle. The principle being the implied (or in this case actual) governmental support of religious activity.

Courts have so vigorously and consistently supported the principle of divorcing religious activity from governmental institutions that one must assume our Commissioners are consciously and deliberately acting in opposition to settled legal precedents. The lack of respect for settled law here is as concerning as the transgression itself.

Commissioners are, of course, free to take time out to pray in their private lives. But when they are engaged in county business: no pay to pray.
