Youth corps summer jobs available

Western Colorado Conservation Corps (WCCC) and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC), with support from Garfield County, are providing summer jobs for 14 young people, ages 18-22, for the upcoming season.

Recently, Garfield County commissioners allocated $160,000 to double the number of conservation corps teams the county will fund for this season.

Crews will work to improve U.S. Forest Service trails and campgrounds in the area, as well as provide weed management and habitat restoration on county lands.

“We are investing in public lands locally and taking the task to heart,” Commissioner John Martin said in a press release. “We are stewards of our local area and don’t just depend on assistance. We are leading the way on how to take care of our lands.”

Crew leaders must be at least 21. A mandatory leadership training for RMYC crew leaders begins Monday, May 14, in Steamboat Springs.

Applicants for both crew leader and crew member positions must be U.S. citizens, available from June through August, in good physical condition and be motivated to work outdoors with a diverse group.

Both positions are paid on an hourly basis. Participants may be eligible to receive a scholarship from AmeriCorps after completion of their work assignment.

Crew member positions are open to Garfield County residents between the ages of 18 and 22. WCCC crew leaders may be from outside the county.

Applications can be submitted online to WCCC at http://www.wcccpartners.org/employment, and/or to RMCC at http://www.rockymountainyouthcorps.org
