Dr. Christiaan Alexander Edward Maurer (September 12, 1972 – May 13, 2019)

Christiaan Alexander Maurer; MD, 46 years old of New Castle, Colorado died May 13, 2019 of Glioblastoma multiform, a type of malignant brain cancer. He was diagnosed with this cancer on Friday the 13th, April 2018.

Christiaan was born on September 12, 1972 to his mother Lynn V. Maurer (McCoy) and his father Edward A. Maurer in Smithtown, New York. At the age of 3 he moved from New York to Leesburg, Virginia where he lived with his family on the farm, Morven Park, for 18 years of his life. Here he learned to love all things outdoors including hunting, archery, fishing and camping.

Dr. Maurer attended the all boys Jesuit high school, Georgetown Preparatory School in Rockville, Maryland graduating in 1990. He then attended Mr. Jefferson’s university of Virginia in Charlottesville graduating in 1994. He was accepted to Georgetown University School of Medicine and graduated with his medical degree in 1998. Christiaan completed internship and Residency in Internal Medicine during the years of 1999-2001 at Georgetown University Medical Center.

He moved to Colorado in 2001, where he practiced medicine in Garfield County, until the diagnosis of brain cancer. Dr. Maurer enjoyed a good debate on a particularly difficult diagnosis or the most effective treatment. He was always late because he loved to chat with his patients about the interesting aspects of their life or family. Many of his patients were long time friends.

While living in Colorado, Christiaan enjoyed lacrosse, archery hunting for elk, and small game hunting with his son along with river rafting, skiing and game nights with his entire family. He trained 2 fantastic bird dogs, Cody and Foxxie, both Labrador retrievers.

In 2015 he married Stacy Atkins. They enjoyed traveling, skiing, rafting and scuba diving.

Christiaan is survived by his wife Stacy Maurer, children Ashley and Alexander, step-sons Jerick and Jordan, step-daughter Breauna, parents Edward and Lynn Maurer, sister Heather Maurer (husband Noah Raskin, and nieces Daisy Raskin and Mariah Raskin, nephew Boman Raskin). He is also survived by Joan McGinnis (Aunt), Anne and Les Carter (Aunt and Uncle), Harriet Maurer (Aunt), and cousins Jack Mackinnis, Michael Maurer Jr, Kenneth Maurer, and Elizabeth Maurer Brancati.
