Frances (Fran) J. Smedra (March 24, 1929 — March 20, 2017)
Frances (Fran) J. Smedra, 87, passed away peacefully at home on March 20, 2017, in New Castle, CO. Born in Omaha, NE, on March 24, 1929, to John and Syble Lyons, she was their second child and attended Catholic School in Grand Island, NE. Fran lived and worked there until she moved to Denver, CO, in the 1940s. She was married to Theodore V. Smedra, who was in construction, on April 14, 1951 in Grand Island, NE. They raised six children, who were their main interest. They moved to Glenwood Springs in 1966.
Fran enjoyed her family, animals, her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, books, writing, art, needlework and being a home maker. She is survived by her daughters Patt (Rick) Jones of Glenwood Springs, Beth (John) Douglas of New Castle, Becky (Rick) McGraw of Peyton, CO; and sons, Tom (Terri) Smedra of Blaine, Minnesota, Chuck (Lisa) Smedra of Longmont, CO, and Dave Smedra of New Castle, CO; as well as 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Terry, her parents, her sister Mary Boyd, son-in-law John Douglas and great-granddaughter Nichole Barnum.
A funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, March 29, at 11:00 A.M., preceded by a rosary at 10:30 A.M. at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Glenwood Springs, followed by an informal get-together in the parish hall. Internment will take place at a later date at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Wheat Ridge, CO.
