James B. Nolen

James Nolen, age 85, our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Monday morning, November 23, 2015, in Tucson, AZ.

He was born December 25, 1929, in Equality, Alabama, to Elmer and Geneva Nolen.

He was married to Freda Z. Nolen, who preceded him in death in December of 2004.

They retired in 1991 and enjoyed living in Sun City, Arizona, until Freda’s death.

James was an ardent sports fan closely following the University of Alabama football team as well as the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks. He was a diligent mentor and supporter of his children’s athletic endeavors of football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, twirling and cheerleading.

He had been in the VA Hospital since October 27 with complications stemming from Pneumonia and Congestive Heart Failure. James had all three of his children with him in his final days. He is survived by those three children, Pat Nolen of Denver, CO., Julia Shaw of Ellensburg, WA, and Paul Nolen of Tucson, AZ.

He was dedicated to serving people as witnessed by his years in the United States Air Force as well as on the Police Department in Glenwood Springs, CO. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1960 and joined the police force in Glenwood in July of that year. In August of 1970, he was appointed as Chief of Police and served in that position until 1974.

He will be interred along with his wife of 51 years at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, AZ.
