Taft Ream Brooks

On Thursday, June 11, 2015, we lost our beloved Taft Ream Brooks (‘Taffy’ / ‘Bear’), unexpectedly, at his home. He was 66 years old.

Born January 23, 1949, in Burlington, Iowa, Taft graduated from Burlington High School. He served two tours in Vietnam in the US Army and later became an electrician, retiring in 2013 from the IBEW.

With a love for sailing and the water, Taft captained the 52-foot Blithe Spirit from Florida to the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas. He also built and raced cars with his father, raced motorcycles, and crafted innumerable things with his creative hands. His adventurous spirit and outgoing personality led to lifetime friendships.

Taft was knowledgeable, curious, and had many interests. He was loved by many and performed countless, selfless acts for others.

On a trip in 1987 to Colorado, Taft found LeNora Hale at the Carbondale Mountain Fair and knew she was the one for him. They were married in Florida in 1989, and eventually moved to Colorado, where they have resided for the last 25 years.

Taft was preceded in death by his father, Sam. He is survived by LeNora and her children, Brenda (Mike) Conner and Eric Hale, of Glenwood Springs, Becky Hale; grandson, Sterling Foster of Glenwood Springs; mother, Louise Hatch of Largo, Florida; brother, David (Kay) Hatch of Roscoe, Illinois; brother, Francis Brooks of Seminole, Florida; sister, Deborah Brooks of Safety Harbor, Florida; sister, Edith Mitchell of Ballwin, Missouri; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Taft also leaves behind his faithful dogs.

A celebration of Taft’s life will be held Friday, June 19, at 2:00 PM, at Christ Community Church, 20349 Highway 82, Basalt, Colorado. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
