Thomas A. Black

Thom passed peacefully from this life on the morning of April 6, 2016, after suffering a heart complication. He was surrounded and supported by his loving family during the last days of his life.

Thom was born in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, to Arrel and Vivian Black on July 29, 1953. He graduated from Glenwood Springs High School in 1971. He married Betty Bright, and they had one daughter, Tina.

Thom joined the Marines, and he was sent on multiple missions overseas and story worthy adventures, he settled in the lovely snow free climate of California in 1985. He met Andrea de Guzman while in the Philippines and were married. They had three children Yvonne (Daniel) Hinriches, Thomas W. Black, and Crystal Black. He often hosted his Colorado family on yearly reprieves from the cold Rocky Mountain winter weather. He loved the beaches and deserts of California.

Thom shared his love for life, diving, baking, good food, story-telling, military heritage and his family with everyone. His heart was ever enduring and always willing to convey the importance of values in the face of adversity until the very end.

Thom is survived by his mother, Vivian Black (Clovis, Ca.); his four children: Tina Epp-Hicks, Yvonne (Daniel) Hinrichs, Thomas W. Black, and Crystal Black; Thom’s grandchildren: Tashina and Colton Roach, Seryna and James Hinrichs, and Thomas M. Black; and two great-grandchildren: Cloe and Lexi Hathaway. Thom is also survived by his sister Cheryl (Buzz) Gilliam, brother Jerry (Kim) Black, and many nieces and nephews and their families and all those he held dear as the friends that life chose as his family. He was preceded in death by his father Arrel S. Black his sister Vickie Price and her husband Billy G. Price.

His memorial was held on April 22, 2016, in Riverside, California, with full military honors. Thom was put to rest in Riverside National Cemetery.
