A chance to help shape paper’s opinions

Wanted: Two people with an opinion.

Job title: A position on the Post Independent’s editorial board.

Job description: As part of the editorial board, you will help shape the newspaper’s opinions. You’ll be involved in debates, and you’ll be required to have an opinion and voice it. The commitment is pretty easy, too. Once a week you’ll be required to attend a meeting of the editorial board. Your position will last six months, and then new community members can join.

You heard it right. We have a great opportunity for someone who wants to get involved with the newspaper.

A newspaper’s editorial board guides the official voice of the editorial page. It is separate from the news stories that appear on other pages in the newspaper. A good editorial page will have a variety of opinions from a variety of people. Good news stories should remain objective and contain the facts.

This is basic stuff, kind of like Journalism 101.

A chance like this doesn’t come around too often. Not a lot of newspapers have community members on their editorial board. Maybe those papers want to perpetuate their cloak of secrecy. Maybe they just don’t like their readers.

Who knows? I know we have nothing to hide. In fact, we value the interaction we have with the community. We want more of it.

Occasionally, we get criticism for being too liberal or too conservative, or having one agenda or the other. That is both true and false, depending on what side of the issue you are on. An editorial, after all, does take a side, and not everyone will agree with the opinion.

Regardless, this is your chance to get involved and help shape our voice.

So you think you have what it takes? Give me call. I’d love to talk with you about it.
