Donate and purchase books for a better world
Garfield County Public Libraries
The communities of Garfield County have proven to be very generous over the years. Part of that generosity comes through in the form of book donations to our libraries. Bestsellers, children’s books, nonfiction, classics — you name it, and the people here will donate it. Some of these donations have been added to our collection. This means we have had more of the hot new books available to everyone, and we can fulfill requests for those titles more quickly. It also means we can offer a wider range of materials with the same budget.
For those books we have not added to our collection, many have been sold at our library book sales. Our Library Friends and Foundation have raised tens of thousands of dollars for our libraries through these sales. These funds have gone to support programs such as Summer Reading and the Big Read. They have also financed special areas in our new facilities like the Friends Community Room in Glenwood Springs, the fireplace in Rifle, and a grand piano in Carbondale.
And yet, our libraries cannot begin to store all of the used books we receive due to the great generosity of our communities. We recently formed a partnership with Better World Books, an organization that helps libraries sell their books online. When Better World Books sells one of its 8 million titles, it generates funds for libraries (like ours) as well as literacy nonprofits in the United States and around the world. To date, Better World Books has raised more than $13 million for libraries and literacy partners as well as directly donated more than 7 million books. In our case, we get funds when either a) one of our donated books is sold, or b) when someone purchases a book through the link on our website. As part of this process we also have chosen The National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) as our literacy nonprofit to support. When our book donations are sold, a portion of the profits support NCFL in their mission to create a literate nation by leveraging the power of the family.
How can you help? First of all, continue to read. That just makes us happy. Second, donate your used books. Third, if you are looking to purchase a book, check out our ongoing Friends Book Sales. Finally, if you have a specific title in mind to purchase go to our website, http://www.gcpld.org and buy it through Better World Books.
Thank you again, Garfield County, for your generosity and continued support.

Economics may seem complex, but it’s actually common sense, which explains why politicians have difficulty considering the economic effects of their legislation.
