Don’t you know me, I’m your native son
Folks who read bylines have probably run across mine by now.
Others may have noticed the bearded chap scribbling notes in the back of the courtroom or taking pictures at First Friday.
It’s probably high time I introduced myself formally to those of you who don’t already know me.
I’m a Carbondale native with roots in the Valley. My mother, Becky Young, came to town in the mid-70s and started the Valley Journal newspaper. My father, Marc, had just wrapped up his senior year at CRMS when he met my mom at Mountain Fair. My older brother, Michael, was born with autism and cerebral palsy but was mainstreamed in the public school system and remains highly integrated with his community.
Prior to joining the Post Independent three months ago, most of my journalistic experience was with the Sopris Sun. I served as the webmaster since the paper’s inception in 2009, and spent a year on the board of directors. I also helped resurrect the Rampage, Roaring Fork High School’s newspaper, and served as its student editor before I graduated in 2008.
Until now, journalism has mostly been a side job for me. I freelanced while watering the plants at Planted Earth, washing dishes at the Red Rock Diner or driving a truck for the Habitat ReStore.
Working full-time for a daily newspaper is a completely different experience. My anthropology degree from CU-Boulder helps more than you might think, but it has still been a steep learning curve. I mostly cover crime, schools and Carbondale, but can end up assigned to most anything. Some days I find myself writing a feel-good story about a dog adoption, and on others I end up following a tragic shooting.
We can’t do this without the support of the community. Many of my favorite stories have started with a phone call from a curious or concerned resident. If there’s something you think I should look into, leave me a message at 970-384-9105 or better yet, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Not every tip becomes an article, but I’m always willing to hear you out.
