Fear, preconceived opinions stand in the way of truth

I watched a television sketch recently where a lady was getting people to sign a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide. At a liberal protest rally, everyone was signing because they were told it was prevalent in rivers and even drinking water. No one seemed to know or even ask what it was. At first it was funny, but after thinking about how gullible they were, it became frightening. A turn of the phrase and people are suckered into signing a petition to ban water.Preconceived opinions are the greatest block to truth, but what really muddies the water is fear. Al Gore has used the fear factor with global warming so effectively that he was given the Nobel Peace Prize.Stirring up fear over global warming is not necessarily bringing peace. Some research is suggesting that global warming could actually increase worldwide food production.

The real issue of concern is our increasing dependence on oil and natural gas. There is probably a connection to so called “global warming,” but the immediate problem is our being joined at the hip to Arab countries who are not our friends. They are growing rich and supporting terrorism with the money from our addiction to dependency on oil. What is the real issue with drilling on the Roan Plateau? It can’t be wildlife, because I have deer in my backyard and other people have bears in their houses. I have seen elk gathered on a drill pad enjoying the sun. Neither can it be environmental beauty. I’ve got nice flowers in my yard.Protesters to gas drilling would have more credibility if they were hanging their personal clothes to dry on an outside line. What is really more offensive, seeing clothes on a line or billions of clothes dryers sucking in gas and pumping heat into the atmosphere?Maybe drilling in the ANWR is better than sending our money to the Middle East. The more we become energy independent, the greater our national security and the greater the economic benefits.

It is difficult to understand how the same people who are passionately against the Iraq War are also against nuclear power plants. Nuclear power has been proven safe, and many European countries derive 70 percent or more of their power from atomic plants. It is also a very effective way to purify sea water. The aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan is powered by two nuclear reactors that can operate for more than 20 years without refueling. It is home to about 6,000 sailors, distills 400,000 gallons of fresh water daily and runs nearly 30,000 light fixtures.Environmental fanatics have also curtailed the production of hydroelectric power. That is a totally nonconsumptive and renewable energy source.Being so dependent on government and on oil supplies is a serious weakness both personally and as a nation. I believe that liberals who deny fact and truth are not only self-righteous, but are aiding our enemies by vilifying our country while at the same time increasing our dependency on Arab oil.

Well-meaning people for selfish and idealistic reasons are backing our nation into an economic corner which will have dire consequences.Maybe a well-informed fear is good.Ross L. Talbott lives in New Castle.
