The 11th season of Glenwood’s Downtown Market
The first market of the 11th season of Glenwood’s Downtown Market kicked off with a bang amidst excitement, a lively crowd, and picture-perfect weather on Tuesday, June 9. The warm, wet spring weather was beneficial to the growers, and the bounty was displayed beautifully in the booths where baskets overflowed with fresh cherries, strawberries, early tomatoes, and colorful root vegetables. A large crowd enjoyed the smooth tunes of Frank Martin, and Josh Oakley of Town restaurant in Carbondale demonstrated his chef’s skill preparing his famous Chicken with Cherry BBQ recipe served with a cucumber salad in the Cooking Demo Booth. Next week promises to be just as fun.
Tony Rosario will be the featured artist in the music tent rolling out his rugged, oaken voice, deftly switching between blues, country, rock, folk, R&B and soul. Rosario is a true son of the soil and a Colorado favorite. He calls himself the Trailer-park Troubadour and “regular folk” representative. He is a skilled, powerful entertainer and an engaging storyteller covering everything from heartaches to hard times with subtle warmth. Rosario coaxes every last note out of his ancient Sears & Roebuck Silvertone guitar like an alchemist divining golden treasures out of common lead. This is Rosario’s fourth season with Glenwood’s Downtown Market as his laid back sound and warm stage personality keeps the crowds coming back year after year. Rosario is sponsored by the market’s good neighbors Sunlight Ski & Bike Shop on Ninth Street.
Gluten Free Momma owner Holly Pihl, a popular favorite vendor at the market, will be demonstrating in the cooking booth. Pihl has dedicated her life to gluten-free cooking when it was determined that her son was gluten intolerant and she had to learn to cook for him. Always a fabulous baker, she will be sharing the secrets for her legendary carrot cake and brownies. Pihl will bring her mixes (for effortless goodies in your own kitchen). She also takes orders for all her creations so you can make your next party a perfect hit. Cooking demonstrations are made possible by the generous donations of Mark Fischer, owner of Town restaurant in Carbondale and The Pullman of Glenwood Springs.
Our growers will be bringing lots of great produce in the coming weeks to the Market. Z’s Orchard, Early Morning Orchard, and Little Valley Veggies will be bringing lots of fresh produce, heirloom tomatoes and local fruit. Kendra from Z’s Orchard says if the great weather God cooperates she will have lots of cherries and strawberries. Skip at Early Morning Orchard will be bringing fresh spinach, cucumbers, carrots and cherries. The growers tell us that the peaches should be available in about two to three more weeks.
Gelu Italian Ice is a new vendor at the market this year. Gelu’s has been plying fresh fruit ices west of Grand Junction and will be a welcome addition to the market this summer. Nothing beats sitting under the trees sipping yummy, colorful and cool fruit flavored ices; it really takes the heat off.
We are often asked if we are sponsored by the city or the chamber of commerce. The answer is “no.” Glenwood’s Downtown Market was launched by a grassroots citizen’s group in 2005 in response to extensive downtown infrastructure updates. The board of directors was inspired to preserve Glenwood Springs’ historic downtown charm. We will be introducing our board members in this column each week. This week we’d like to introduce Julie Larson, a Colorado native who grew up in Castle Rock and moved to Glenwood (for the second time) in 2012. Julie joined the market board last year and is a valued creative force and also an accountant. She has quickly put our books in order, an important thing for any nonprofit operation. Julie has a heart for volunteering, especially if it involves giving back to her community.
