The West Garfield Democrats will have a fundraising picnic on Sunday, Aug. 20, at Cottonwood Park in Parachute. There will be barbecues, baked beans, salads, soft drinks and cookies for $10 (children younger than 12 free). Beer will be available at $2 a can for adults with a picnic ticket. The city of Glenwood Springs Community Center will be offering an American Red Cross Lifeguarding class from Aug. 27 through Sept. 7.Anyone 15 years of age and older is eligible to take the class, after passing the pre-course swimming skills test. The pre-course test includes swimming 500 yards using the front crawl and breast stroke, retrieving a 10-pound brick in 10 feet of water and swimming 20 yards with it to the shallow end. Mandatory attendance at all classes is required. Pre-registration is required and the cost for the class is $115 for Glenwood Springs residents and $125 for non-residents. This fee includes an ARC Lifeguard Training Manual and certificates upon successful completion of the class. These certificates include a three-year (renewable) certificate in ARC Lifeguarding and First Aid, a one-year (renewable) certificate in CPR, AED and Oxygen Administration. The City of Glenwood Springs accepts applications for lifeguard employment from any ARC certified lifeguard. Positions are presently open. This is an open invitation to all past and present students of Sue Edstrom Santos Aqua-Fit classes to join her as she celebrates her 15th year of teaching water aerobics in the Roaring Fork Valley. The reunion of all her students will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Carbondale City Pool. An old-fashioned ice cream social booth will provide sundaes and root beer floats on Saturday, Aug. 12, as part of the KDNK Blues and Brews party on Main Street in Carbondale. Moes Southwest Grill is hosting the Burritos for Life national burrito-eating contest finals for the Western region at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Glenwood Meadows location. The contest features winners from Moes Glenwood and Edwards stores. The first contestant to finish four, one-pound burritos in the fastest time wins a trip to Atlanta to compete nationally for free Moes burritos for life and a custom Roger Bourget chopper.
