A benefit dance will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Riverside Middle School. The money raised will be given to three local families who have recently been struck with cancer. The dance is being sponsored by Robert, Colby and McCade Cox for their grandmother; Sheila Masias, Tessa, Cody and Cauy Walls for their grandfather, Buddy Walls; and Korbyn Brown for close family friend, Jackie Nicely. With Rockin DJ Dorsey, kids grades five through eight wont want to miss this event. All kids must be checked in and out by a parent. VOAD, Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters, is seeking assistance with helping the victims of the recent fire in Carbondale. Sixteen individuals were displaced and are now seeking available rental housing. Most of the victims work in Aspen and prefer to stay in the town of Carbondale. If you are a landlord or know of any available housing, please contact Catholic Charities at 384-2060 or Salvation Army at 945-6976. VOAD consists of local nonprofits and churches who work together immediately in times of disaster to help victims satisfy basic survival needs.
Chilis Grill & Bar will donate 100 percent of Sept. 25s profits to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital as part of its campaign to raise more than $3 million for the world-renowned pediatric cancer research center. The September campaign honors National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Through the end of September, Chilis will continue to promote its month-long Create A Pepper to Fight Childhood Cancer campaign, during which restaurant guests may donate $1 or more to color a pinup of Chilis signature pepper. In addition, supporters can visit http://www.createapepper.com to purchase Create A Pepper T-shirts that can be customized with permanent marker to fit their individual style. New this year are Create A Pepper Gift Cards, which offer a means of giving to those you love while giving back. Chilis will donate $1 to St. Jude for every $25 purchased in Create A Pepper Gift Cards, which can be customized with permanent marker or crayon.
Carbondale Clay Center is hosting Joe Zeller for a two-day workshop entitled, Travels to China: Altered porcelain vessels. The weekend includes demonstrations of the process of throwing and altering porcelain forms. Kicking off the weekend, Zeller will give an evening slide lecture on Friday evening (potluck at 6:30 p.m., slides following.) Workshop registration: 963-2529.
