Gretchen Weber, RN, will recall her experiences as a courier nurse for the Santa Fe Railroad from 1969-71 at 7 p.m. this Thursday, April 5, at the free monthly meeting of the National Railway Historical Society. She will bring her uniform and other memorabilia to share.The Glenwood Railroad Museum is located in the east wing of the Amtrak station. Two live shows of original stand-up comedy will take place at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at the Winchester Nite-Club, 2090 Whiteriver Ave. in Rifle. Nonprofit human service agencies serving Garfield County are encouraged to apply for funding from United Way of Garfield Countys 2007 campaign. Grant applications are available on http://www.unitedwayofgarfieldcounty.org and are due back to United Way by May 17.Last year, through the generosity of employees, donors and businesses, United Way gave more than $100,000 in funds and goods to nonprofit agencies. Because local agencies have been struggling with rising demands combined with less financial resources, United Way does fund general agency operations as well as special programs. Mark Fischer of Carbondales Restaurant Six89 will host a winemakers dinner featuring Villa Creek Cellars at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10. Winemaker Chris Cherry of Villa Creek will present unique blends of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Tempranillo varietals. Unlike the single-malt traditions of Scotch, many of the best wines in the world are varietal blends, and Villa Creeks small production style wines are excellent examples. Mark Fischer will create a six-course meal to compliment a selection of Villa Creek wines. Reservations are encouraged for the six-course meal with wine pairing. The town of Carbondale will be turning on the irrigation ditches Monday, April 16. Until then, the public works crew will be busy completing annual cleaning and maintenance work. Please keep access open, inspect your ditch, and remove any debris or plant material that has accumulated since last year. Questions, call public works at 963-1307.



Colorado State Parks offers boating safety classes as part of the statewide boating program, which helps boaters get under way safely while enhancing their boating experience. The course is open to adults as well as teens and includes a home study manual, a two-hour classroom review and a written exam. Preregistration for the course is required.Rifle Gap State Park will offer boating safety classes in the spring and summer. The city of Glenwood Springs will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste collection event from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the recycle center, 11th and School streets. There will be no charge for those living within the city limits of Glenwood Springs. Appointments are required and may be made by calling South Canyon Landfill at 945-5375. Roaring Fork Conservancy is pleased to announce its 2007 Watershed Explorations Calendar. These events are designed to get residents of and visitors to the Roaring Fork Watershed out learning about all sorts of watery resources in the valley. Included are float trips, guided walks, tours of diversions, habitat restoration projects and river related-events. The deadline for Dandelion Day design submissions has been extended to April 6. Organizers are looking for designs that portray the spirit of Dandelion Day and a clean environment. Submissions can be turned in to Carbondale Town Hall, attention Mark Feinsinger.

The Friends of the Glenwood Springs Branch Library will hold its spring used book sale May 5-12. Call the library at 945-5958 for specific hours.
