The town of Carbondale is accepting 2008 Nonprofit Community Service Grant Requests for general operating and special project funds. Nonprofit applicants must meet one of the following categories: family and youth well-being; physical health; mental health and substance abuse prevention; the well-being of seniors; community program effectiveness; cultural, recreational and educational treasures; regional collaboration; or environmental quality.Applications are available at Carbondale Town Hall, 511 Colorado Ave.; on the town Web site; or via e-mail from Town Clerk Cathy Derby: deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.

The Roaring Fork Valley affiliate of Habitat for Humanity has two separate opportunities for local families to learn about the steps involved in applying for homeownership with the nonprofit agency. Habitat plans to break ground in the fall of 2007 and complete the project in the first half of 2008 for a duplex in Rifle. Two informational meetings will be held for interested families. The first meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at St. Mary of the Crown Catholic Church, 397 White Hill Road in Carbondale. A second meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in Room 111 of The Learning Opportunities Center, 839 Whiteriver Ave. in Rifle. A follow-up application work session will be held to assist families in completing the Habitat homeowner application process. The work session will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 22 at St. Barnabas Church at the corner of Blake and Hyland in Glenwood Springs. Glenwood Dance Academys fall classes start Sept. 4. In addition to ballet, tap, jazz, and modern professional classes, a wide variety of recreational dance classes are available including adult ballet, adult jazz and adult tap, adult and kids hip-hop, adult and kids salsa, and ballroom dancing. The Rural Adoption Cooperative will sponsor an annual family celebration event from 3-7 p.m. Sept. 11 at Veltus Park in Glenwood Springs. This After School Picnic is free to all adoptive, kinship and fostering families and the community providers who support them, as well as anyone interested in fostering or adoption.
