The West Garfield County Landfill is now on winter hours, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and closed on Sundays. The landfill will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Friday, Nov. 23.It will reopen at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24.

Preschool Story Time will be held Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Rifle Branch Library. However, story time is canceled Thursday, Nov. 22, in observance of Thanksgiving. Story time will resume the normal schedule at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 28 and 29. Story time is open to all children preschool age and under. For more information, call 625-3471.

Majid Kahhak will paint a live portrait of beloved longtime Carbondale resident John Doc Philip, at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7 (First Friday), at Kahhak Fine Arts & School, 411 Main St. in Carbondale. The public is invited to welcome Doc back after his major surgery, and help celebrate his recovery and evolving new life. Wine and snacks will be served. For more information, call 704-0622.



The first local screening of The Last Ridge, a PBS documentary by 10th Mountain descendant Abbie Kealy, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen.The Aspen Historical Society has partnered with volunteers of the Roaring Fork Veterans History Project to create this special fundraising event to benefit the continued recording of veterans oral histories. It will feature local oral histories and a discussion with the filmmaker.A lobby reception with 10th Mountain hut display, vintage ski memorabilia and photo opportunities will be held following the fundraiser. The event is free to the public, but contributions are encouraged. Sponsorship information is available by calling Kip Hubbard at 925-3721.

The Cedar Ridge Ranch Riders Mounted Drill Team will be hosting a meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Mi Casita Restaurant in Carbondale. Interested parties may stop in and meet the group. For more information, please call 948-6726.



The fifth Writing the Sacred, a womens contemplative retreat, will be held by Sandra Dorr Jan. 2-6 at St. Benedicts Monastery in Snowmass.
