The Gear Exchange, 212 Sixth St. in Glenwood Springs, will celebrate bike culture this weekend. Join the Exchange crew from around 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday for a day of crazy bike-building and fabrication, with a barbecue and music from KDNK DJs. On Sunday, Slappy, a local bike enthusiast and event organizer, will host the Wakin Bacon ride, starting from the store at 9 a.m. During the ride, Slappy is planning to cook breakfast on a portable stove. Sometime between noon and 5 p.m., Steve Skinner, and possibly other artists, will play at the store as well. To wrap the whole weekend up, join Slappy and company for Sundays Full Moon Cruiser Ride, taking off at 8 p.m. from Sopris Park in Carbondale. Victims Assistance and Law Enforcement (VALE) Fund Board is now accepting grant proposals. The VALE Board enters into contracts for the purpose of fostering victim and witness assistance services and enhancing the responsiveness of law enforcement to victims of crime. The source of this funding is the 37 percent surcharge placed on fines or a set fee (whichever is greater) in county and district criminal court cases. The Board shall accept and evaluate proposals submitted by or on behalf of governmental, law enforcement, nonprofit, or other agencies not excluded by C.R.S. 24-4.2-105 (2.5) (a).The funding cycle is from July 1 through Dec. 31, 2009. This is an 18-month grant cycle. Based on 2007 collection averages, the projected amount available for this funding cycle is approximately $360,000. The funding priority is for the implementation of the rights afforded to crime victims pursuant to section 24-4.1-302.5 and the provision of the services and programs delineated in section 24-4.1-303, 24-4.1-304 and 24-4.2-105 (4). The VALE Board encourages the development of local training projects dealing with crimes against persons with emphasis on working with the victims. The Board will consider program costs and expenses including overtime of officers attendance.Contact the VALE Board Administrator for further information and to request grant proposal forms.
