The 11th annual Basalt River Days is looking for volunteers to ensure the success of Basalts signature summer event. Volunteers are needed in all positions and various times starting with set-up Friday morning, Aug. 15. Volunteers working four or more hours receive a T-shirt and an invitation to a volunteer appreciation party later in August. A new series of African-inspired djembe classes for beyond beginners will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Carbondale Community School. The six classes will be held for two hours every other Thursday through Oct. 23. However, the second class will deviate from this schedule due to unavailability of the school, and will be held Friday, Aug. 29. Preregistration and payment deadline will be Tuesday, Aug. 12. Students must have their own drum and have familiarity with bass, open tone and slap strokes. Private lessons are possible to get these basics prior to the class series. Focus will be on traditional multi-part rhythms, poly-rhythms and creating rhythms. Fluidity, coordination and rhythmic sensibility will be further cultivated, and opportunities will be presented to also play dunun, shekere and bell. The Basalt Chamber of Commerce presents Borderdrive as part of the Basalt Summer Music Series from approximately 5:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, in Triangle Park at Willits Town Center. Anthony Hannigan, 1999 national mandolin champion, and exciting newcomer Jillian Brosnan founded the band without borders, which combines swing, bluegrass, Celtic, ragtime, jazz, classical, Appalachian and more into an original, captivating performance.Bring blankets and beverages for an evening of great music.
