Majid Kahhak will paint live from 6-8 p.m. May 1 (First Friday) at Kahhak Fine Arts & School, 411 Main St., Carbondale. The painting will be inspired by May flowers. Beverages and hors doeuvres will be served. Call 704-0622 for more information.

Even Start in Glenwood Springs is having an open house from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22.Even Start is located at Glenwood Springs Elementary School, 915 School St., in the long red module to the right of the front entrance. Even Start is a half-day bilingual program for 3- to 5-year-olds Monday through Thursday. Spaces are available for Fall 2009 for both English- and Spanish-speaking children.An additional benefit to all parents are the weekly free Parent Education Workshops, discussing a wide range of issues such as: discipline, kindergarten readiness, the importance of play, dental care, etc.Parents who qualify and are interested may also enroll in English as a Second Language or work on their GED in classes at CMC Blake Center while children are in the program. The ninth annual Alpine Christian Academy benefit golf tournament is scheduled for May 8 at the Roaring Fork Club in Basalt. The four-person scramble event begins with registration and practice at 11:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Registration fee includes golf cart and refreshments. Prizes awarded to the top three finishing teams. Player registrations are first-come, first-served. Hole sponsorships are available.All donations are tax deductible and help fund scholarships and educational programs for students. Alpine Christian Academys seventh annual rummage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25. Donations of all types are being taken. Drop off items at the trailer at the school or call the number below. The annual Blood Drive in memory of Cody Brickell will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the Glenwood Springs High School main gymnasium. All blood donated on this day will be sent to St. Marys Hospital in Grand Junction in memory of him. Donors must be 18 years of age and have a photo ID, or 17 years of age with a written authorization from a parent or guardian, along with a photo ID.
