New Hopeful Heart and the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts would like to invite persons, and their caregivers, of the Glenwood Springs and Carbondale Area, who are in recovery from drug addiction, brain disorders and/or mental health issues to participate in a mural project titled “This Little Light of Mine, I’m Going to Make It Shine”. First organizational meeting will be Wednesday May 20th, at the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts Artist in Residence Art Studio, at 7pm. Well known local artist Renick Stevenson will be directing the project. Please call ahead to reserve space, as it is limited. Join Carbondale Water Department staff on a bicycle tour of Carbondales ditch system at 5:30 p.m. on May 28. Tour the main ditches in town and look at maps to learn about the origin of the water and where it goes, from the local experts who know. Bring your own bicycle and helmet (helmets are required). Meet at Carbondale Town Hall. This event is part of Roaring Fork Conservancys 2009 Watershed Explorations and is sponsored by the town of Carbondales Environmental Board, Carbondale Public Works Department, Colorado Division of Water Resources and Roaring Fork Conservancy. Colorado Rocky Mountain School presents its spring underclassmen drama A Night of Melodrama, featuring two one-act plays Curse You Jack Dalton and Egad, What A Cad! showing at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, in the CRMS Barn. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children and students, at the door. The CRMS Barn is located one mile west of the Highway 133/Main Street traffic light in Carbondale. The Parachute Library Book Sale will be held Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, from 10 am. to 5 p.m. Loads of books and media items will be at the outdoor sale at the Parachute Branch Library, 244 Grand Valley Way. Phone 285-9870.

Play board games and have fun all day Saturdays in May at the Gordon Cooper Branch Library in Carbondale. Different level board games will be set around the library.The Gordon Cooper Branch Library will be canceling the Friday morning Lap Sit Story time on May 15 to make room for the Friends of the Gordon Cooper Library Spring Book Sale. OUR School preschool in Glenwood Springs is holding a multi-family yard sale on Saturday, May 16 from 8 am to 1 p.m.. There will be many treasures to be found, including kid gear, toys, housewares, tools, clothing/shoes, sporting goods, books, audio and video entertainment, and furniture. Enjoy homemade goodies while you shop. Proceeds benefit the school’s playground project. OUR School is located at 3126 S. Grand Avenue (past Berthod Motors). For more information, call 947-0636.

Jennetta M. Howell will perform A One Woman Show at the Cardiff Schoolhouse in Glenwood Park May 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. The theme of the performance will be A Journey to New York and Back, which will be a showcase of music, rhythm and rhymeThis is a Champ Chair Players presentation. Park at the Sopris Elementary school walk on the bike path to the school house.Tickets at the door are $15 and seating is limited so bring a chair.Advance credit card tickets available at 945-2174.

Applications are now available for the 2009 Miss Strawberry Days Scholarship Contest and are available at, at your local school, or by contacting the chamber at 945-6589. Contest applications are due Friday, May 15. A total of $4,500 in scholarship funds will be awarded to three local young women. Applicants must be age 16-20 as of June 1 and must be a resident of the Re-1 or Re-2 school districts. Also the women must never have been married and never have had children. The scholarship award is distributed directly to the recipients continuing education institution of choice in the amount of $2,000 for first place, $1,500 for second place and $1,000 for third place. Join Colorado Animal Rescue for our 7th Annual Mayday for Mutts adoptathon, featuring discounted adoption fees, live music and food, agility and fly-ball demos, bouncy house and cotton candy for the kids and many local vendors.
