County must step up RFTA funding

They’re not paying their fair share.Residents between Rifle and Glenwood Springs have a daily bus service that runs from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Last year, the Hogback service handled about 50,000 passengers.Only Glenwood and New Castle are helping pay for it.On Nov. 2, Silt and unincorporated Garfield County residents rejected ballot proposals that would have established sales taxes to support the RFTA bus service.Glenwood Springs has been a funding partner since 2000 when it instituted a sales tax to support bus service. Glenwood residents voted to increase the tax to 0.6 percent on Nov. 2. New Castle residents voted to join RFTA and passed a 0.4 percent sales tax on Nov. 2, but Silt rejected the proposal, as did residents of unincorporated Garfield County. Rifle never put the question on the ballot.RFTA has acknowledged that it may have to reconsider levels of service to Colorado River communities because of lack of funding.This Monday, RFTA director Dan Blankenship will appear before the Garfield County Commissioners to appeal for $100,000 to support transit service. The county has not been a strong partner for RFTA despite the fact that some of its constituents rely on the service to get to work each day. It’s time the county steps up and pays its fair share.
