Congratulations to the Grand Valley High School wrestlers. Three of our boys placed in the Class 2A State Competition held in Denver. Ryan Gallegos, a freshman, brought home second place; Jared Tonder, also a freshman, placed fourth; and Cody Mills, a junior, placed fourth. Way to go, guys.Congratulations to the following students for a job well done at the Western Colorado Regional Science Fair held in Grand Junction last weekend. Middle School: First-place award to Brandi Krieg; and a second-place award and two special awards to Ashley Williford. High School: First-place award and two special awards to Dani Gonzales; second-place awards to Kami Keeling and Kelsey Satterfield; two special awards to Andy Chardonnay; and a special award to Maritsa Arizaga. Dani also qualified as a state finalist and will present her project at the Colorado State Science Fair held at Colorado State University on April 5.

If so, make plans to attend a five-session clinic at the Battlement Mesa Activities Center being taught by members of the Castaways Fly Fishing Club. The cost is only $20 for all five sessions, or attend the sessions that appeal to you for only $5 per session. This clinic is open to all ages. Everything you need to know about fly fishing equipment; composition of fly rods, what is meant by rod and line weights and why they are important, reels, backing leaders, tippet, artificial flies, tools of the trade, vests, waders, and how to care for your equipment.Tying It All Together 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 15. Learn to tie many of the important fly fishing knots so that you can tie fly line to leader, leader to tippet, tippet to flies and other know-tying hints that will make your fly fishing more enjoyable. An important hands on session.Bugs & Water 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 22. Learn the entomology of Colorado lakes and streams and how to identify the various trout food sources so you will be able to match what the fish are eating with your artificial flies. Also learn to read the water so you have an understanding of how to locate the fish. You cant catch them if you dont know what they are eating and where to find them.Fly Casting 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 29. Learn the proper way to hold a fly rod, stripping, mending and feeding line, and several important casts such as the forward cast, false cast, reach cast, roll cast and serpentine cast. This session will be held in the gym. Extra fly rods will be available.On The Water Casting (time to be announced) Saturday, March 31. Practice what you learned by fly fishing on the Parachute pond or Colorado River, with help and instruction from members of the Castaways.
United Methodist Church will offer a Beef Brisket Dinner from 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, March 9 at the Grand Valley United Methodist Church in Parachute. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children.
