Grand Valley Days is this weekend
Grand Valley Days has been held annually since 1909 in Parachute. This year’s theme is “Salute to Volunteers.” There will be a climbing wall at Cottonwood Park both Friday and Saturday, July 22 and 23. A rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, July 22, at the Grand Valley Park Association Arena.Begin your Saturday morning with a pancake breakfast at the Senior Center. They will be serving from 7-9 a.m. After breakfast, bring a lawn or bag chair and find a spot under a shade tree at the Grand Valley Early Literacy Center to watch the parade, which starts at 10 a.m. Grand marshals of the parade are George and Betty Letson. There is still time to enter the parade; call me at 285-9740 or Sarah Orona at 285-1111.Immediately following the parade, stay on the front lawn of the Literacy Center for the Firemen’s Street Sports. The kids just love this activity with prizes for everyone.There will be another rodeo at 7 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grand Valley Park Association Arena. A free street dance will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Cottonwood Park, sponsored by Alpine Bank. Exit 42 will be providing music for the dance.Don’t forget to purchase your raffle tickets for cash prizes from any member of the Park Association, which will be available at the parade. The Builders Club will be serving concessions at both rodeos. Sounds like a fun time in Parachute this weekend.Special OlympicsThe Western Area Summer Classic of cycling, bocce ball, golf and tennis for the Special Olympics will be this Friday and Saturday in Battlement Mesa and Parachute. One hundred and fifty Special Olympians, 50 unified partners, 40 coaches, 50 families, and 125 volunteers are expected for this event. We are especially proud to host this great event. Call the Activity Center at 285-9480 for more details.Back to School Teen DanceThe Back to School Teen Dance will be from 6:30-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at the Activity Center. This dance is for kids entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades this coming school year. There will be a live disc jockey, and light refreshments will be served. The cost is $5.50 per person.
