The Activity Center has been ablaze with events the last couple of weeks. The photography show was held Sept. 15-30. Mr. Doug Senteney, the art teacher at both Grand Valley High School and St. John Middle School, was the judge for the show. All the entries were excellent; my daughter, Dani, and I were very impressed and amazed at all the hidden talent in our community. Mr. Senteney must have had a difficult time selecting winners. The People’s Choice “Best of Show” award was selected from votes cast by the public. Pete Wahlman received this honor for his entry “Quiet Reflections.” The sponsors of the show were the Viewfinders Camera Club, Battlement Mesa Activity Center and the Battlement Mesa Company.

The Kid Curry Scurry was held at the Activity Center on Sat., Sept. 27. Various types of walking, running and swimming races were held. There were 45 participants and lots of volunteers on hand. They all were having just a great time. There was one runner in particular that was inspiring; Ms. Catherine Evans finished the 2K run just short of 18 minutes. She placed third in her event and was the first woman across the finish line. But here’s the kicker – Catherine is 81 years old! She crossed the finish line a little winded, not a lot winded, and then she reminded the runners finishing after her to drink water so they wouldn’t get dehydrated. Catherine is quite a gal and one of those assets to our community. Anne Huber and Fran Storm would like to thank the volunteers whose hard work made this event such a success: Robin Martin, Joe Cason, Nick and Sharon Massaro, Mindy Campbell, Misty Cruz, Al Baker, Lori Sweers, Amy Finley, Kathy Grizzell, Catherine Evans, Kathy Morris, Adam Ford and Larry Huber.Tomorrow evening, Friday, Oct. 3, is Grand Valley High School’s homecoming. The tailgate party starts at 5 p.m. at the high school. The sloppy joe dinner is just $4 for adults, $3 for children under 12 or $20 for the family. Volleyball games start at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and the football game kickoff is 7:30 p.m. See you there!!- Mary Moore’s column, “Grand Valley News,” appears every other Thursday.
